The Umbrella Plant
The Cyperus alternifolius has many common names including Umbrella Plant, Umbrella Palm, Umbrella Sedge, and Umbrella Papyrus.
As one would expect, the Umbrella Plant is a lover of the rain and thrives in damp, soggy conditions. It’s easy to grow, and is completely impossible to over-water. This fast-growing perennial prefers full sun to part shade and when watered well, can easily reach a height of 3 to 5 feet. It’s native to the swamps of Madagascar but is perfectly content in other warm climates. While often seen beautifully displayed in water garden features, it will also do very well in a flower bed or container; or indoors near a sunny window.
Mature plants produce white flowers and seed.
The Umbrella Plant may be grown outdoors in a frost-free environment in Zones 8 through 11.
